Old Thetfordians around the globe may wonder how the old town is getting on so I am writing this to give a snap shot of the town in 2009.

The town is poised for another era of expansion with another 5,500 homes earmarked with the possibility more to come. As someone who lived through the overspill years I am very keen to ensure that we have learnt from the experience, namely our heritage is protected and incorporated sympathetically in new projects and that the town has the facilities and infrastructure to cope with the increased population.

Thetford has been on our screens recently featuring in Jonathan Ross Salutes Dad’s Army and the Comedy Map of Great Britain. ITVAnglia’s Bygonesreturned telling Thetford’s Pulp Ware story. The BTO continues to fly the Thetford flag with its regular media appearances. Thetford appeared on the BBC Country file programme and the town was also the subject of an article in the Guardian

The town’s Tourist Information Centre (TIC) continues to cater for the increasing number of tourists the town receives and administers the ever growing numbers coming on the Dad’s Army guided walks around the town. Audio guides of the town’s Thomas Paine and Heritage trails have been produced and are available from the TIC. 2009 is expected to be a bumper year with the 200th anniversary Thomas Paine Celebrations.

A Dad’s Army Museum was opened in December 2007 at the back of the Guildhall. Run by a group of enthusiastic volunteers the museum has recently been extended and is attracting fans from around the globe. The proposed statue of Captain Mainwaring for the town made headlines around the world and the Museum continues to raise funds to bring this to fruition.

The A11 dualling to Barton Mills finally looks as if work should start in 2010.

The Anchor hotel frequented by many TGS pupils closed in June 2006 and was recently purchased by Breckland Council to potentially form part of a scheme to redevelop the whole of the Bus Station/Riverside Car Park when the Bus Station is moved.

The Thetford Society continues to provide a forum for discussion about events happening in the town. One of the Society’s aspirations is to enable the Grade 1 listed Abbey Barns next to the Priory Gatehouse to be used for an interpretation centre for the adjoining Priory and a centre for the Brecks. Anyone able to offer any support in this matter please contact Stuart Wilson on (01842) 751770.
